The cost of energy in recent years has skyrocketed, so it's no surprise that most of us are looking to get the best deal possible on our household electricity and gas.

In recent times, our fixed tariffs are regularly the most competitive on the market, but that isn't the only reason you should switch to Ecotricity.

Many people compare energy prices to find the cheapest possible deals, but things aren't always as straightforward as they may seem. What looks like a good deal on paper doesn’t always work out that way for you or for the environment.

The environmental cost

We should all be buying 100 per cent green energy. Fossil fuels are killing the planet, the natural world and countless people around the world.

Any small savings you may make by choosing a fossil fuel tariff will be wiped out by the cost of climate change, both on a personal and community level. More powerful storms, dangerous heat waves, droughts, rising food prices, higher insurance premiums – all these and more are direct consequences of fossil fuels and climate change.

We can still take action to combat the climate crisis, but we need to act fast in reducing emissions and capturing carbon.

We do this through our Bills into Mills approach. Instead of paying dividends to shareholders, we invest your bills in building new forms of green energy. Other big companies, even green ones, pay out their profits to shareholders, so your money isn't being used to combat the climate crisis in the same way.

This is part of the reason that Ecotricity is a Which? Eco Provider for energy. This independent rating is based on a range of sustainability criteria, including generating renewable power, buying and selling renewable power and selling green gas.

What questions should you ask?

Choosing a green energy supplier isn't always straightforward. But there are some simple questions you can ask to make the energy you’re buying is good for the environment as well as for your pocket:

  1. Does the supplier sell only 100 per cent green electricity? If not, your money is supporting a company that still profits from climate-wrecking fossil fuels.

  2. Do they generate their own green electricity? If not, they're just buying green electricity from elsewhere and not actively increasing this amount of green energy available in the UK.

  3. Do they supply vegan green gas? Some companies supply ‘green’ gas but use animal by-products to generate it. We don't think this is right. It's ethically wrong and supports factory livestock farming, which is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in the UK.

  4. Do they generate green gas? Our green gasmills will soon be busy making sustainable household gas from grass.
