Case Study
The Lyric Hammersmith
Staging everything from experimental modern theatre to classic plays, The Lyric Hammersmith is one of Britain’s best known and best loved theatres. As a producing theatre company, the Lyric is a busy place day in, day out, which is powered and heated by Ecotricity.
For the last nine years, the business has been undertaking a sustainability project to reduce its energy use and carbon emissions, and Ecotricity has been a contributing factor in the project’s success. In the three years leading up to 2019, The Lyric reduced its carbon footprint by 50% and in 2018 alone, thanks to Ecotricity, it went down by 15%.
Renewable energy
During this period, the Victorian theatre has been refurbished with new seating, low energy lighting and the impressive plaster ceiling has been repainted. Wherever possible, materials have been repaired and reused, and anything removed has been recycled whenever possible. Using Ecotricity’s renewable energy parallels the Lyric’s eco-friendly ethos.
Throughout the theatre, the Lyric has a green team working to reduce the environmental impact of the business. It is becoming a plastic free zone. For example, new staff members and new actors each receive a recyclable plastic water bottle when they join to cut down on plastic waste. Plus, on the seeded roof you’ll find three beehives, home to 180,000 bees, which produce 600 jars of Hammersmith Honey a year.
We’re with Ecotricity and we have a brilliant green renewable electricity and gas supply.
